FAIRY TONIC

Few things are more iconic to the Legend of Zelda series than fairies. Fairies and fairy fountains can be found throughout Hyrule and the neighboring principalities through most of the eras and timelines. In Breath of the Wild, Link can cook fairies (let’s not dwell on this thought for too long) to make a fairy tonic.

"This powerful recovery elixir harnesses the power of fairies. It has a sweet fragrance."

The tonic is stated to have a sweet fragrance. We can assume this implies it also has a sweet taste. The pink liquid in the bottle is also bubbling. This seemed like the perfect excuse for another Zelda cocktail, a sweet, bubbly cocktail.

When I think of fairies, I think of flowers, berries, and, well, sweets in general. So, I wanted a bubbly drink that had berry and floral flavors. This will be accomplished by blending Prosecco with raspberries and rose water. A little lemon juice is also added to being everything together. The result is a sweet and floral bubbly cocktail that I think really embodies the essence of a fairy. I recommend listening to the Great Fairy Fountain theme while sipping.

Ingredients
1 oz raspberry simple syrup, chilled
5 oz Prosecco, chilled
½ tsp lemon juice
¼ tsp rose water

Raspberry Simple Syrup
1 ½ cups fresh raspberries (6 oz)
1 cup water
1 cup granulated sugar
½ tsp vanilla extract

First we need to make the simple syrup. Start a small pot over low-medium heat. Add the water and the sugar to the pot. Stir the sugar into the water with a spatula until the sugar fully dissolves. Once the sugar is dissolved, add the raspberries and the vanilla and then stir.

Turn the heat up to medium and allow the mixture to come to a simmer. Once it reaches a simmer, turn the heat to low, and mash the raspberries using a potato masher. Allow the mixture to simmer for 10 minutes; it will thicken slightly and turn red.

After 10 minutes strain the syrup through a mesh strainer and into a bowl, using a spatula to scrape the raspberry pulp and work all of the syrup into the bowl. Discard the raspberry pulp and seeds, and place the raspberry simple syrup in the refrigerator or chill.

Now that we have chilled simple syrup, we can make the cocktail! To a champagne flute, add 1 oz of raspberry simple syrup, ½ tsp of lemon juice, and ¼ tsp of rose water. Gently stir them together with a spoon. Now, add the 5 oz of Prosecco. The drink is finished. Enjoy a taste of fairy magic!

You can make this a non-alcoholic drink by substituting seltzer water for the Prosecco.
