SPICY SAUTÉED PEPPERS

The Kingdom of Hyrule has its fair share of colder regions. Mount Hylia, Mount Lanayru, the Hebra region, and the Gerudo Highlands are a few of these snowy, frigid areas of the vast kingdom. Foods that warm the body and provide some resistance and relief from the climate are essential here. One of these foods is the spicy pepper. These can be sautéed to create a dish that is very helpful for providing some cold resistance.

“The spiciness of these sautéed peppers had been broken by the heat for a sweeter taste.”

To create this dish, I took inspiration from blistered shishito pepper recipes. But, shishito peppers are not an orange or red color, and not all redder hot peppers will sweeten, as described in-game, from sautéing. I also considered that eating a plate of hot peppers may not be the most appealing idea for a side dish for everyone. So, in the end, I decided to use a sweeter pepper that better matches the look of the in-game peppers and add some crushed red pepper to add a tinge of mild heat to it. A little butter and honey help to add a nice glaze to the peppers. The finished peppers are sweet in flavor with a mild background spice. This was a rather delicious plate of peppers. I think eating a plate of these at snowfield stable would help me forget the cold… at least for a little while.

Ingredients

24 red and/or orange mini-peppers

1 tbsp melted butter

2 tbsp honey

1 tsp crushed red pepper

1-2 tbsp olive oil

You can use any mini peppers of your choosing for this recipe. I use the sweet lunchbox peppers.

Add the melted butter, honey, and crushed red pepper to a bowl. Mix together well until the ingredients are completely combined into a glaze.

Set a pan over medium-high heat. Once the pan is warm, add the olive oil and swirl it around to coat the pan.

Add the peppers to the pan. I recommend placing a splatter screen over the pan to avoid any potential oil splatters. Toss the peppers every minute or so to get the peppers evenly blistered and to avoid burning one side. Allow the peppers to cook for about 6-10 minutes, until the peppers have softened.

Turn the heat down to low. Add the glaze to the peppers and toss the peppers to evenly coat them in the glaze. Allow the peppers to cook for about another two minutes, stirring or tossing as needed.

At this point the peppers should be evenly glazed. Turn off the heat, remove the pan from the burner, and use tongs to place the peppers on a serving plate. Enjoy!
