VEGGIE PORRIDGE

As the gloom infiltrated Hyrule, many of its residents fell ill to an awful gloom-borne illness. In Kakariko Village, Lasli and Claree’s grandmother unfortunately also fell ill from close contact with the gloom. Their grandmother’s illness has caused them to raise prices at Enchanted to get money to help with the illness. Fortunately, Link is able to assist by making some rice porridge using sundelions to help heal her.

Although the recipe of focus in game is rice porridge made from sundelions, porridge can be made from other greens as well, such as Hyrule herb. Cooking Hylian rice with milk and green vegetables makes for a quick and easy meal in Hyrule at any cooking pot.

Porridge made of easy-to-digest vegetables, fresh milk, and Hylian rice. An uplifting dish”

This is honestly an incredibly easy dish to make. It is essentially ‘overcooking’ rice using way too much liquid which turns it into a porridge. We’ll cook the washed rice down in water and then again in the milk, which will turn it into the creamy porridge. Chopped spinach and salt will finish off the dish. Very simple, and quite the blank slate. You can accent it with a number of other ingredients such as soy, egg, or a number of other things to enhance the dish. Sick or well, a bowl of this with some other Kakariko veggies would make for a nice bely warming morning meal on a brisk morning in Kakariko Village.

Ingredients

1 cup white rice (Jasmine or Japanese short grain)

2 cups water

2 cups milk

¼ tsp salt

1 cup baby spinach, chopped

Wash the rice thoroughly under water to remove any excess starch.

Set a sauce pot over medium-high heat. Add the rice along with the water and salt. Stir. Allow the water to come to a boil and then reduce the heat to low to maintain a simmer. Allow the rice to simmer in the water for about 10-15 minutes, until the water has almost completely cooked off and been absorbed.

Add the milk to the rice, and stir to combine. Turn the heat back up to medium-high to achieve a boil once more. Once it starts boiling, immediately reduce the heat to low to maintain a simmer again. Stir the rice regularly as it summers. Allow the rice to simmer until the milk has mostly been absorbed and the porridge begins to take shape, thickening and becoming creamy. This will take approximately 10-12 minutes.

Once the porridge is ready, remove it from the heat. Stir the chopped spinach into the porridge, evenly distributing it throughout. Lastly, salt to taste. The porridge is ready. Serve it bowls.

I recommend serving some additional toppings along with the porridge. Chopped green onions, maggi, fried eggs, and fermented or fried tofu make for excellent additions to the porridge. Enjoy!
