FISH SKEWER

Nestled along the southeastern coast of Hyrule, Lurelin Village is a quiet fishing town known for its ocean breeze, humble huts, and the unmistakable scent of fresh seafood drifting in from the docks. Fishermen return at dawn with their morning catches, and it’s not uncommon to see someone squatting by a driftwood fire, skewering whole fish with practiced ease before roasting them —simple, satisfying, and deeply tied to the sea.

"A simple dish made by cooking chunks of fresh fish on a skewer."

This recipe pays tribute to Lurelin’s rustic charm—though with a few practical liberties. Instead of skewering whole fish like in the game’s recipe picture (as much fun as that might be), we opt for bite-sized cubes of tender white fish (as stated in the recipe description), marinated in a zesty blend of lemon, garlic, and a spice mix worthy of Zora’s Domain. They’re quick to cook, easy to share, and perfectly paired with a cool, herbed yogurt sauce. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet evening on a Hyrulean beach by a fire or just channeling your inner fisherman at the grill, this dish brings a little flavor of the Hyrule coast to your plate.

Ingredients
4 white fish filets (such as snapper, cod, grouper, halibut, haddock, or tilapia)
½ cup olive oil
¼ cup lemon juice
2 tbsp Zora Spice
4 cloves of garlic, sliced
¼ cup green onion, chopped
Salt and black pepper

Dipping Sauce
½ cup Greek yogurt
⅓ cup mayonnaise
1 clove of garlic, minced
2 tbsp dill, minced
1 tbsp green onion, thinly sliced
1 ½ tbsp lemon juice
¼ tsp salt

We need to begin with marinating the fish. Pat the fish filets dry with paper towels and then cut the fish filets into roughly 1 – 1½ inch cubes. If you are using skin-on filets, you may choose to remove the skin before cutting the fish into cubes if you prefer. Season the fish cubes with salt and black pepper.

In a bowl, combine the olive oil, lemon juice, Zora Spice, garlic, and green onion. Stir or whisk to fully blend the marinade. Add the fish pieces and toss the fish well in the marinade, ensuring that each piece of fish is fully coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow the fish to marinate. Allow the fish to marinade for 30 minutes to 1 hour. You can place the bowl in the refrigerator while the fish marinates.

While the fish marinates, make the dipping sauce for the skewers. Combine the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, garlic, dill, green onion, lemon juice, and salt into a small bowl. Mix well with a spoon or whisk until the all of the ingredients are fully incorporated. Place the sauce in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.

Before assembling the skewers, soak the skewers in water for 15 minutes to ensure they don’t burn. I recommend using 9 inch skewers to allow enough space for a few pieces of fish.

To assemble skewers, slowly push the skewer through the center of each fish cube, placing about 4-5 cubes of fish on each skewer. Be sure to leaving a little air space between each item to allow even cooking.

Once assembled, you can cook them a number of ways:
  • Air fry the skewers in batches at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 8-10 minutes, turning them halfway through.
  • Grill at 350-400 degrees Fahrenheit for 6-8 minutes over direct heat, turning them halfway through.
  • Bake in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 12-15 minutes, turning them halfway through. (You can optionally switch to broil for the last two minutes of the cook to add a little char to the fish skewers.)
Cooking times may vary a little based on the type of fish you are using and the specific size of your fish cubes.

I recommend serving two skewers per person along with a portion of the dipping sauce. Rice and either a salad or grilled vegetables make great accompaniments for the skewers. Enjoy!
